Practitioners need to have a good handle on basic federal income tax rules. This session reviews planning opportunities and the hidden traps that crop up in traditional estate planning. \n \n \n \nProperty Powers of Attorney: Are You Aiding and Abetting Legalized Theft? Paul Hood\n \nJust about all estate planners preach to their clients (and anyone else who will listen) about the efficacies of durable property powers of attorney, i.e., avoidance of a conservatorship or guardianship proceeding. But recent case law and statistics suggest a growing trend of abuse of property powers of attorney, particularly around the edge of capacity. Paul will discuss:\n \nWays to minimize the potential for mischief with property powers of attorney \n \nThe anatomy of a property power of attorney \n \nBlended family powers of attorney traps for the unwary\n \nWays to hold the agent accountable\n \nWays to “encourage” third parties to accept property powers of attorney\n \nUse of escrow arrangements to hold property powers of attorney.\n \nForms and clauses provided.\n \nFederal Income Tax Update, Sam Donaldson\n \nStay up to date with this informative and entertaining recap of important cases, rulings, regulations, and  legislation from the past 12 months in the federal income, estate, and gift tax laws. \n \n \n \nHuman Side of Estate Planning/Psychology of Estate Planning, Paul Hood \n \nHuman Side of Estate Planning/Psychology of Estate Planning- Paul will discuss the psychological factors at play for both clients/donors and estate planners/development professionals alike. He will introduce three psychological phenomena (transference, countertransference and triangles) at work in every day estate/charitable planning encounters. He will discuss death anxiety, mortality salience (fear of talking about death) and the 12 distinct fears that clients/donors can have about estate/charitable planning. He will introduce motivational interviewing and appreciative inquiry, which are tools that can assist clients/donors in the planning process.\n \nThis one hour presentation will address these questions:\n \n·         Have you ever wondered why people act the way they do in estate planning?\n \n·         Did you know that clients can have as many as 12 distinct fears in estate planning?\n \n·         Do you know the obstacles that stand in the path of a “good estate planning result?”\n \n·         Have you ever wondered what clients/donors go through psychologically in estate/charitable planning?\n \n·         Did you know that estate/charitable planners aren’t exempt from the psychological ramifications of discussing death and bring their own baggage into the planning process?\n \n·         Have you been looking for tools and resources that will help you understand clients/donors better and help them conclude their planning?\n \nCancellation policy\n \nCancellation by 1/15/20 — Refund minus $100\n \nAny time through 1/15/20, a registration may be transferred to another person for $60 plus any applicable difference in fees.\n \nAfter 1/15/20, no refunds or transfers\n \nAny cancellations mailed in must be received on or before the cancellation deadline date. All cancellations must be in writing.\n \nThe full-day registration is a package fee. Cancellation policy applies to purchases of only morning and afternoon sessions. There are no adjustments for attending only a portion of the presentation. \n[Register Now](https://www.saepc.org/council/special-projects)
